That added stem gives users a secure place to grab onto the earbud when taking it out of the case, placing it in their ear, or adjusting its fit without accidentally enabling the playback controls. It’s initially a bit off-putting, but after a couple of weeks of use, it’s proven to be a brilliant addition. The Studio Buds have a traditional in-ear design with customizable tips, but they feature a small stem that sticks out from the sides of either one. The positives continue to the earbuds themselves, though they can take some time to warm up to. The plastic case does feel a bit on the cheaper side even compared to the Google Pixel Buds A-Series, but it’s compact, the lid snaps shut with a satisfying click, and the USB-C port allows for convenient recharging. The similarity is especially strong with the Studio Buds in their White color, but unlike AirPods, Beats has two other styles for users to choose from (including Black and the striking Beats Red seen above). The charging case has a very familiar oval shape that opens from the top, revealing two earbuds held in with secure magnets. At first glance, the Beats Studio Buds look a lot like AirPods Pro.

That’s a compelling package for just $149, and outside of a couple of quirks here and there, Beats managed to deliver something extraordinary. Unlike other Beats releases, the Studio Buds don’t have an Apple H1 or W1 chip of any kind. Instead, they promise a seamless experience across iPhone and Android - all while delivering active noise cancellation, ‘premium sound,’ and a sleek design. With the Beats Studio Buds, that changes.

With headphones like the Powerbeats Pro and Beats Studio3, most of them have been designed with Apple-exclusive chips so they work perfectly with iPhones, iPads, and Macs. However, rather than axing the Beats name and using the company’s audio experience exclusively for Apple products, Beats-branded gadgets have continued to be released. Apple acquired the company in 2014 for $3 billion, and in the years since then, Apple has used that acquisition to launch its AirPods and HomePod lineups. Understanding where Beats stands in 2021 is a bit tricky. While they may not be perfect, the Studio Buds stand out as one of the most fascinating and compelling earbud releases of the year.
